Title insurance is a policy that protects the buyer of a property from any title defects, liens or encumbrances. Title insurance lasts for as long as you own your home, but it does not protect you against any future problems with the title. Once you sell your home, the title insurance policy ends.

How Long Does Title Insurance Last?

Title insurance lasts for as long as you own your home and can be renewed at closing if desired. The policy may also include coverage for special situations like boundary disputes and easements.

When you're ready to sell your home, either by owner or through an agent, the title company will issue a new policy on behalf of the buyer. This new policy covers all future transactions involving the same property and is in effect until the title company cancels it or until there's another change in ownership. If there are no further changes in ownership, then this policy will stay in effect indefinitely.
